Depens (penicillamine) on reason: Intubations are normally done when you have received sedation and paralysis.  Ones done when you are awake are normally emergent when you are in respiratory distress.

Awake intubation: No it doesn't hurt physically.  Sometimes we use an awake intubation technique if the airway is to difficult to secure without the patient awake and breathing.  We numb the airway and sometimes give sedation to make it more comfortable.  And as soon as the tube is in the patient can go to sleep right away.

Important technique for anesthesiologist to be comfortable with, patient is typically sedated and comfortable during procedure.

Carefully!: Intubation is the insertion of a breathing tube into the windpipe (trachea). Usually it is done through the mouth with an instrument called a laryngoscope. Sometimes it is necessary to use a fiberoptic bronchoscope, either through the nose or the mouth. The area will be numbed. The fiberoptic scope is used to get a good view of the vocal cords, then the breathing tube is advanced into the airway.
