This is difficult: There aren't too many exercises you can do to avoid atrophy after surgery especially if you are limited in your activities (ie weight bearing vs non-weight bearing).  The type of cast or splint you are in and type of surgery may also limit the activities you can do.  If it is ok to do quad sets or straight leg raises with the splint or cast on, this can help prevent atrophy of the quadriceps.

Pain and swelling: An avulsion fracture is merely a break in a bone caused by a pulling force of a muscle/tendon.  In the foot, it is common at the base of the 5th metatarsal.  You would have pain, swelling, and probably bruising to the area.   It needs to be treated professionally as would any fracture.

Avulsion fractures: Avulsion fractures occur when you experience a traumatic injury involving a tendon or ligament interface with bone. When this occurs, either the bone or the ligament is going to fail. In an avulsion fracture, the bone fails to resist the traumatic force subsequently fracturing and still attached to the ligament pulling on it. They are very common, especially in younger individuals.

Very simple Cam Boot: Avulsions: common due to numerus capsular and ligamentous attachments to the cuboid.
Treatment: 5-7 days nwb, elevation followed by progressive weight bearing and functional rehab, using simple cam boot. For 3 weeks.

Depends: Depending on where the avulsion occurs and to what degree and what treatment is rendered, will determine the physical therapy needed.  The fracture usually has to heal by rest and splint of some sort or may have to be operatively "fixed" with wire, screw or other means.  Then , your doctor will recommend the right physical therapy if needed or indicated.  Work with your doctor.
