Not necessarily: Early signs of Autistic Spectrum Disorder are usually deficits in pre-linguistic social communication &amp; gradually diminishing eye-to- face gaze. A typical 4-month-old smiles, laughs, goos &amp; coos reciprocally, matching open-vowel sounds that you make while looking &amp; smiling at him. No: Unless there is an underlying case of macrocephaly from hydrocephalus the "standard" autistic child has a smiler size head to anyone else.

See below: This is a behavioral disorder. It is possible that an autistic child shows some of this symptoms, but they are not exclusive to autism. Please talk to child psychiatrist or psychologist to investigate further.

Not uncommon/maybe: "Counter dependency" is that stage when your kid has started getting around on their own and want you nearby, but doesn't want you interfering in what they are doing. This behavior is not unusual, is seldom done without witnesses, and mostly when they are mad at you.It increases if it grabs your attention, and fades if ignored. This is not specific or predictive of autism. Any kid could be.

"Hypotonia" is the: Term for low muscle tone (passive resistance to movement) with decreased strength & gross motor delays. A significant motor delay (holding head up in prone position is a 2-mo.Milestone) qualifies him for therapy through your state's early intervention program to maximize development. Ask your pediatrician about referrals to pede.Neurologist & a developmental pede. To try to determine the cause.

Not really: Head trauma can create injury severe enough to cause behaviors that may seem similar to those with autism. It does not cause autism itself. Autism has brain inflammation as a component and digestive issues. Mild head trauma will not lead to autism. Repeated head injures can lead to Parkinson's and dementia later...Not autism.

No: Hypotonia is more often associated with muscle or movement disorders than autism. It can also be transient. I know a few professionals that believe they can see signs of autism as early as 9 months, but not with hypotonia as a presenting feature.

I wouldn't: Head banging is one of the many amplifications of crying used to get your attention. It works well with some and self perpetuates.If you monitor the fit with peripheral vision and wait until it stops before looking directly at or interacting with the kid, it will often stop.This is common in preverbal toddlers. Reward the kid with more attention after they stop a fit than during to end this.
