can anyone tell me something about ectopic atrial tachycardia? i had an ablation for avnrt, but still have breakthrough episodes and doc says this.

Different focus: Assuming your av nodal re-entrant tract was well and fully ablated, and you're now having a different tachycardia, your cardiologist is suggesting that there is an abnormal spot in the atrium initiating rapid abnormal beats. May need different drugs or another procedure.

i was scheduled for atrial flutter ablation but doctor was unable to induce the flutter. heart healthy other than angry spot on right atrium .   suggests metropolol.  flutter was seen on ilr.  now believes it was actually atrial tachycardia. right?

There are many: causes of atrial tachycardia in a young person but most likely this is a physiological response to some form of stimulation. Anxiety, excitement, dehydration, fever can all be associated with this. The aberrant conduction is a reflection of normal physiology if the heart rate is fast enough or could represent a minor abnormality of the conduction system.

Arrhythmia: Atrial tachycardia would be unlikely to cause a "catch" type of pain, its physiology doesn't suggest a way to do that.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Avnrt is due to an extra electrical pathway in the junction between upper and lower chambers that your born with.  Whereas focal at is acquired and usually due to some scarring.  Both ca be managed medically or potential cured by catheter ablation.

Why not: Atrial tachycardia is common in people. When we get excited, frightened, run or do something strenuous. In most cases it will not interfere with our job related activities if it is mild. If you have another kind of tachycardia, then you need to give us a more definite diagnosis.

It can start suddenl: It is unlikely that you had it all your life without a doctor noticing it and without you knowing it.

Hard to speculate: Atrial tachycardia is a description not a diagnosis. It just means the rate is controlled by the normal atrial pacing system. It can occur spontaneously, normally with exertion, or in an illness. Without a full review of your history, records &amp; exam it is hard to project whether it would ever occur again.
