i was on a combo of atovaquone, azrithmysin,doxicycline and nystatin for lyme and babesia.day 40 developed traveling hives/rash . stopped all medication. but now 4 days in there is no improvement. been taking benadryl which only helps about an hour?

Need to see doc: Based on stated information it does not sound that your rash was due to side effects from the antibiotic/ antifungal combo you have been taking. A variety of conditions, including renal and/or hepatic, related or unrelated to your treated infections may have developed and your best reference at this point is your treating doc who will have a clear history and documentation of your ailments.

Not strong evidence: While some may now write in their own story of success-which we would all be glad to hear-there are not human studies which back the widespread use of this combination. These medicines are sometimes used in babesiosis, lyme disease, and bartonellosis, but the jury is still out. Locate the best infectious disease doctor you can and seek their wisdom and advice first. Atovaquone/Proguanil: I just did a quick search at www.Drugs.Com & found no alcohol prohibition/interaction. Treats Babesia not L: Atovaquone (mepron) is not effective for treating borrelia, the lyme bacteria. However, up to 70% of those with chronic lyme have babesiosis, a co-infection, and Atovaquone is the "drug of choice" for this. Successful treatment of chronic lyme requires treating co-infections like babesia & bartonella. There are natural alternatives to Atovaquone but that drug is relatively safe & effective.

Mepron (atovaquone): This is the brand name for atovaquone, an antiparasitic drug used occasionally in patients with tick borne illnesses when coinfection with babesia microti may be present and Azithromycin is used in combination.  Not aware that Atovaquone is active against borellia burgdorfi, but if you go on line you can find testaments to its efficacy for almost anything.  Be skeptical.

Not 1st line : Lyme disease is normally treated with Doxycycline or rocrphin depending on stage of the disease.  Mepron (atovaquone) is normally used for babesia.  It is sometimes prescribed for Lyme disease but is not a first line treatment.  It is also not the recommended treatment by the American college of rheumatology.  Common side effects of Mepron (atovaquone) include stomach problems, sweating, a funny taste, dizziness.

Malarone (atovaquone and proguanil): Since you should be taking this for a week after you return from Vietnam you would be best advised to wait 2-3 days after discontinuing this medication. Good luck.

I am not aware of : Atovaquone by itself or in combination with proguanil as Malarone (atovaquone and proguanil) to be associated with urinary retention.
