Talk to your doctor.: If you are having problems with your medication get in contact with your doctor so he/she can start you in another medication. It is never good to just stop a medication unless you are experiencing significant side effects in which case you would need immediate evaluation so symptoms and options can be discussed with your provider.

If ok with your doc: Medications like Atenolol can be taken as needed for anxiety instead of every day as long as that is done along with your prescribing doctor and as long as there is no other reason like high blood pressure why you are prescribed the medication.

Consult your doc: Atenolol is a 'cardioselective' beta-blocker. In layman's terms, it blocks the effects of adrenaline on the heart, and blunts the 'fight or flight' syndrome that anxiety-sufferers often needlessly find themselves in. This bodily response to anxiety (rapid heart rate, sweating) can further promote anxiety, a self-perpeuating cycle. Too high a dose can dangerously lower hr & bp, so consult your doc!

Be careful!: Tenormin (atenolol) is a beta blocker.  It blunts the effect of Adrenalin (epinephrine) on the body systems such as heart rate, pounding in the chest, shaking, tremors and the like.  These drugs should be carefully prescribed and carefully taken, especially depending on age, medical condition and response.  The doctor should directed dosing.  The maximum dose recommended is 100 mg. Let md do this!

Low dose of: buspirone. That combination may lower blood pressure - but if it were to occur - usually happens when treatment is initiated and often improves over time.

SSRI : An SSRI (example: Paxil) would be a much more appropriate med if you have long term anxiety, will work more effectively than atenolol. It won't really interact and eventually the goal would be to ditch the atenolol and just use an appropriate anti-anxiety med.

Therapy?: Have you yet tried any form of psychotherapy? Typically, the optimal combination of things to treat emotional issues such as anxiety or depression is medication (which, on your best day, is supposed to take the edge off symptoms) but the real gruntwork takes place in psychotherapist's consulting room.
