No: Typically we tell patients to avoid taking both aspirin and ibuprofen together as they have similar mechanisms of action and can cause adverse effects (GI bleeding, etc).

is ibuprofen safe, short-term, (one to two days), for toothache relief even though i am taking a daily 325 mg aspirin for preventive heart health?

Accepted Answer

Pharmacy: Combination of Aspirin and Ibuprofen can be problematic. And unless your doctor told you to take an adult Aspirin i would recommend a baby Aspirin 81 mg.  Less chance of GI problems but still heart healthy but check with your doctor.

Any anti-inflamatory: Which ever one works the best you can take, but not over the recommended dose.  A topical treatment for toothache is clove oil, you can place on cotton ball &amp; apply to your tooth.  Makes it numb. Do not drink it. Pharmacy carries this. You should  use for  a few days as you  wait for a dental appointment. Baby teething gel less effective but o.k.

NO: Depending on your reaction to aspirin, if you develop hives, swelling, abdominal cramps with diarrhea and shortness of breath from Aspirin you should avoid all non steroidal antiinflammatory drugs, including advil (ibuprofen).

No: Prob not a good idea. You double the potential for stomach problems, is you take lo dose Aspirin for heart protect, Ibuprofen may block this benefit, may also compete with each other at sites where your sticky clotting cells bind together. And why do you see the need?

Why do you need it?: These medicines are used for different reasons. Tylenol (acetaminophen) can sometimes help with fever, but it is not as good of an anti-inflamatory medication.  Asprin has been shown to help reduce heart attacks in patients at risk, and if necessary see an allergist so s/he can evaluate if you need asprin, and if "asprin desensitization" is medically necessary.

Naproxen, caffeine: You may want to drop the Aspirin and Ibuprofen and try naproxen.  Also consider taking some form of caffeine.  Stay safe!
