what to expect for recovery from an acl repair?

Stable knee: An acl reconstruction that heals well should provide you with a stable knee. Other variables such as the status of your knee joint cartilage and especially the status of your medial and lateral menisci also weigh heavily in determining your final degree of functional painfree recovery. Immediately postoperatively, you will have mild to moderate pain and swelling relieved by oral pain meds.

: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see a doctor. Wish you good health!

what are the functional restrictions after having an acl repair?

Accepted Answer

None: After the acl reconstruction has matured, which takes 6-8 months, the body has grown into the new acl graft, and there should be no restrictions. After a new reconstruction, we limit running/jumping/pivoting to allow this graft to mature. Depending on technique and graft, we typically avoid running and jumping for 3-4 months and pivoting for 6-9 months.

Hot tub: Ask your physician, but should be ok if the wounds are completely healed.

how does an acl reconstruction with allograft work?

Accepted Answer

Like old acl: Allograft is tissue from a cadaver (dead person). The allograft is anchored in place where the old native acl was. It heals just like the old acl however it is non-native tissue. Allograft can be either hamstring, achilles tendon, patellar tendon, or quadriceps tendon.   In a young patient under 30 there is a higher re-rupture rate in acl reconstruction using allograft.

how much time off work do i take after an acl reconstruction?

Variable: That depends on a number of items: the type of work you do, the method of acl reconstruction, and the graft choices. In some situations, it may take 4-6 months before returning to work. On the other hand, I have patients that are able to return to office work a couple days after an all-inside allograft acl reconstruction. Definitely ask your surgeon!

is there a way to help my boyfriend after his acl repair surgery?

Supportive: For the most part you just need to be supportive.  He should be largely self-sufficient and should be able to get around pretty well, and start working on his range of motion and strengthening exercises.  Good luck!

i'm 7 weeks post acl repair with continued swelling. should i worry?

Accepted Answer

Depends: An acl reconstruction has usually calmed down by 7 weeks. However, there can be many reasons for swelling. Swelling along the inner part of the knee could mean that you are still limping on the knee (and need to continue working on quad exercises). Swelling inside the knee could relate to associated damage such as cartilage and meniscus injuries, even if addresses at surgery. Time for a follow up!

if i stop my sport for some months can acl repair it self?

Accepted Answer

No: The acl does not heal. You may be able to adapt to your acl- deficient knee w/ time but most young adults will have problems. Most common problems include knee instability, meniscus(cartilage) tears, and inability to return to previous activity level.Middle- aged adults may avoid surgery w/ quad strengthening/ bracing and activity modification.
