Yes, but depends: Any surgery can cause pain and discomfort.  Arthroscopic surgeries are typically less invasive and involve less soft tissue injury so compared to a surgery done thru a large incision, arthroscopic surgeries are often less painful.  But, everyone is different even in their response to the same surgery.  Some procedures are painful because of the underlying injury and any surgery may hurt.

Varies: The typical uncomplicated knee scope requires 3-4 weeks to recover from.  Unfortunately, not all scopes are the same.  With meniscus repair, 3-4 months are required.  With ligament repair/reconstruction, 4-6 months.  With cartilage work/repair, anywhere from 2-12 months.  Confirm the proposed procedure to get a more accurate estimate from your surgeon.

Joint surgery: This surgery involves insertion of a lighted instrument with video camera attached into a joint and using small instruments through very small incisions to evaluate and treat certain types of joint problems.  Because these surgeries are done through small incisions (1cm) there is less pain and a quicker recovery than doing surgery through larger incisions.  Used often for knee, shoulder, and hips.

Yes!: Arthroscopy of the TMJ has been around for years, similar to knee or other joint arthroscopy. It involves inserting a small scope under anesthesia into the joint in front of the ear and manipulating the disc and other tissues inside the joint, plus lavaging, or flushing out the joint. It has a high success rate in treating internal derangements, or disc displacement, and arthritis of the jaw joint.

will i be able to go back to school after arthroscopic surgery?

Yes: Within 2-3 days, the swelling from a knee arthroscopy should be under control and allow one to return to school, likely with crutches.  Periodic ice and elevation of the leg will still be necessary, as well as progressive gentle range of motion exercises.

Arthroscopy: Arthroscopic rotator  cuff repairs do not heal faster than mini open or open rrotator cuff procedures   arthroscopic had advantages of less initial pain and ability to view entire shoulder for additional pathology.

is it possible for a mcl tear to go unnoticed until an arthroscopic surgery?

Accepted Answer

Not typically: The mcl ligament is not technically inside the knee. It consists of two parts, and neither part is really visible with arthroscopy. However, it is sometimes not picked up if the surgeon did not perform a thorough history and examination. Further, an mcl tear is often made worse during the pulling and torque involved in knee arthroscopy. Please inquire with your surgeon.
