are pillows bad for your neck?

Let me help: You need a pillow to support your head. If not, your neck will be straining all night. I guess if you feel more comfortable without one, than fine, but it's probably a bad idea.

i was working out 5x's a week. since stopping a month ago i have had tense neck,  can it be related? i am on computer more & know my pillows are bad.

Neck strain: I believe you are answering your own question. Yes, most certainly it could be related, as well as computer use, especially if not at eye level or not using a flat pillow. Try an ice pack wrapped in a towel to the area of discomfort for 15 minutes on and 45 minutes off for the next two days, naproxen or ibuprofen if not allergic and no kidney or liver failure, and gentle neck stretches.

Absolutely: Over or under extension of the neck, sleeping with the neck in a funny position, anything that keeps the neck in a less than neutral position can cause stiffness, with the pillow a likely suspect

Neck pain at night: Neck pain of increased severity and lasting for several weeks is cause for concern. You should be evaluated ,perhaps a virtual consult would be a good start.

Neck pain: Not sure you need to see a doctor at all. If just happened use ice on the muscle. Can use otc pain relievers. Also use a good cervical support pillow. Expect to be improved in 5-7 days. If worsening pain or tingling or numbness into arm see you primary care doctor.

Dr. can evaluate: Throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (Tamiflu (oseltamivir) may be used for influenza), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. A person might see a doctor if the sore throat is very painful or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat and influenza).  Influenza (the flu) can cause a big headache, which the Dr. can check.

Pillow support: You can actually go to a pillow store around you. I think there is one in monroe   you can try out certain pillows and see what works the best for you. Everyone's needs are different. Good luck.

It depends : In general, i would be hesitant to accept any advice that recommends a particular brand of pillow. What you should aim for is a pillow that provides enough support to be comfortable but which doesn't bend your neck too far.  You should make a personal decision on what would allow you to rest comfortably on a flight vs. What is worth lugging along.

Pain in neck: Neck pain can be due to sleeping on it wrong - as you suspect.  Also, by propping your head with a pillow, these symptoms can be magnified.  Occipital neuralgia is one cause. It is due to whiplash injury or neck arthritis. Certainly straining the muscles of neck due to heavy lifting or inordinate exertion could be responsible. If this persists, pursue thorough and careful neurological examination.

what do you advise if i sprained my neck almost two months ago and i've experiencedlong. will a neck pillow be good enough for support?

See Spine Specialist: Often it takes more than one epidural injection to help with pain.  Also you could be having pain from your facet joints so consider evaluating these as sources for your pain and treatment options such as facet joint injections or radiofrequency ablation.  Lastly although not covered by insurance stem cell therapies have been helpful in healing tissues as well.
