Cyst: A mucocele is a mucous retention cyst that can occur in any area of the mouth where there are minor salivary glands. It occurs when the duct is severed from the gland or the duct is blocked and saliva pools under the soft tissue.
A rather large type of mucocele, called a ranula, can also occur under the tongue. This involves one of the major salivary glands in this area.

Mucocele: In my opinion ,mucocele will need a surgical excision. if it is drained it runs the risk of reforming. your doctor may inject steroids in the lesion and that may help in some cases .but even that is a invasive procedure!!

Depends on size: A mucocele  is caused when the duct to a minor salivary gland gets clogged or traumatized and the saliva backs up forming a fluid filled bump. They are most common on the lower lip but can occur elsewhere in the mouth as well. Small ones can resolve on their own. Large ones (as shown here) require surgical removal by and oral surgeon. If needed it is a minor surgery.

Usually none: Draining a mucocele (of your lip) will not cure the problem and poking it with an unsterile needle could cause it to become infected. You should see and oral ; maxillofacial surgeon and have it treated properly.
