No evidence that: diet has any affect on appendicitis, and only indirect evidence that eating seeds causes diverticulitis.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Yes, you can have mild versions of both but this is pretty uncommon.  There are other diagnoses that can cause similar symptoms in a young woman including ovarian cysts, pregnancy, endometriosis, and irritable bowel syndrome.  See you doctor for a full evaluation.

Unlikely: I'm assuming you mean right lower quadrant pain.  With no fever and no WBC elevation, it's unlikely that you have diverticulitis or appendicitis.  HOWEVER, they are both still possibilities.  Diverticulitis would be especially unusually on the right side with your age.  I would bet on a colitis, constipation or an ovarian cyst before appendicitis.  But this is still a guess.

Diverticulitis: You are so young for diverticulitis. You better rest those bowels for a few days and flush them out and then change your eating habits or you will have problems as you age

Specifics please: In what position do you feel better/ worse? What is the quality of pain--sharp, stabbing, pressure, bloating, gassiness?  Where in your abdomen (right, mid, left) do you experience discomfort?  Duration pain lasts?  Is pain deep or superficial?  Have you seen blood with stool or change in bowels? Any chance of pregnancy (sexually active)? Any bladder/uti symptoms? Ur doc will need this info 2 help

Guess: In left lower quadrant odds are in favor of diverticulitis, but would expect tenderness. Others are possibilities. Good to have investigated as you are doing.

Curable: Diverticulitis can usually be treated medically (with antibiotics), but when there are complications or recurring episodes surgery may be indicated, in which case the disease can be cured with an operation to remove the diseased portion of the colon (usually the sigmoid colon) and this can usually be done laparoscopically.

is it true that diverticulitis is a hereditary disease?

Generally not: Diverticular disease is generally a sporadic , acquired problem with the large intestine (mainly left colon and sigmoid colon) and considered to be caused primarily by poor fiber diets. This causes smaller stools and higher colonic pressures required to evacuate those stools . There are  rare inherited  connective tissue disorders associated with diverticular disease but these are the exception.

YES,: IT WILL NOT HURT, IT WILL NOT HURT ANYBODY ACTUALLY.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Some current GI folks do not buy into the seeds restriction.
I general avoid most watermelon seeds - fun to spit at a tree!
