i was with a friend who was giving her child of 2years pediavit minimum (contains a,c, d, fluoride 0.25mg) instead of pediavit (only vit d) because she couldnt find at the drug store.i want to warn her but im not sure if im right. isnt f harmful?

Not particularly: If you live in an area where the water source has excess fluoride I would avoid it. However, in most locations that vitamin combination is the one often recommended by pediatricians. Fluoride in a proper amount helps create teeth that are not as prone to decay.

Certainly: Fluoride mouth rinses help reduce and prevent tooth decay. Clinical studies have demonstrated that use of a Fluoride mouth rinse and Fluoride toothpaste can provide extra protection against tooth decay over that provided by Fluoride toothpaste alone. Fluoride mouth rinse is not recommended for children age six or younger because they may swallow the rinse.

Not really: Fluoride rinses are helpful with preventing tooth decay but only  mildly helpful with plaque removal and hardly at all with preventing  calculus buildup. There are some rinse additives that claim to prevent calculus buildup but studies don't bear it out. The best way to reduce calculus and tartar build up is with physical plaque removal with a toothbrush and floss and regular dental cleanings

1000 ppm: Per the cdc, most otc toothpaste sold in the us has 1000 to 1500 parts per million fluoride. Otc solutions of 0.05% sodium Fluoride (230 ppm fluoride) for daily rinsing are available for use by persons older than 6 years of age.

Neither: You don't have to either one after drinking liquids. Fluoride rinse should be done just once a day, preferably at night before bed.  Listerine can be used during the day after something noxious, such as onions or garlic, to help freshen your breath.

No problem : If you swallowed a small amount of Fluoride rinse will not cause any problems.  A large amount can cause an upset stomach.

Yes: A fluoridated rinse is always preferred for its anti cavity and  slightly antibacterial effects. Crest pro health and listerine zero are alcohol free so they are less drying to your oral tissues.

Fluorosis : Young children have a tendency to swallow these products and we do not want to overdose them on fluoride. It can make them vomit also.

Accentuates results: OTC mouthwashes do, in fact, contain some acids and their ph level tends to be acidic because of that.  The effect on teeth, damage to the teeth is minimal, but the effect on the surface of a tooth allows fluoride to integrate with the enamel of the tooth and strengthens it.  So an acid environment does not necessarily cause problems if it is needed.

dentists say not to rinse after brushing, just spit. could this cause excess fluoride intake especially if you have breakfast soon after brushing?

Accepted Answer

After brushing: Technically it's best not to rinse out after brushing as it washes away more of the fluoride that would remain from the toothpaste. Eating the right foods, avoiding sticky starchy sugary foods and following proper tooth brushing and flossing techniques AFTER meals is probably the best way to avoid cavities. You should use the minimal amount of toothpaste &amp; no then worries about excess fluoride.
