i had blood drawn 6 business days ago for anticardiolipin antibodies, igc, igm. what is the avg turnaround time? my labs usually post results same or next day. could there be more tests to check the results of this one? wondering why the delay?

: This depends of the type of test they are doing for these. Call the lab. Some may have to be sent out to other lab and this may take some time if send by reg US mail.

Higher future risk: The cause of an elevated aCL without other diseases is unknown.  That said, 50% of people with + lupus anticoagulant have or will have SLE.  Presumably, manifestations require the aCL plus another problem - infection, one of a number of drugs, pregnancy, BC pills, etc.  The significance is the higher than normal risk in the face of future immunological injury

do you rule out aps if anticardiolipin antibody and beta 2 glycoprotein (both igg and igm) are often elevated but in borderline and weakly positive range?

No: The diagnosis depends on a combination of clinical andlaboratory findings. Data is supportive but we need more information.   Other data that would be important is the result of   the lupus anticoagulant evaluation. The data regarding your clinical findings are very relevant here.

Anticardiolipin Ab: The primary consequence of the antiphospholipid antibody is non-inflammatory thromboembolic (clotting) disease. Virtually all venous and arterial systems have been cited, including large, medium, and small vessels. It could simply mean that the underlying disease process (lupus) is not being treated or controlled.

Antiphospholipids: Autoimmune antibodies can be formed against natural (normal)  cell surface proteins. When this happens, adverse effects can occur. Anti-cardiolipin antibodies have been associated with abnormal blood clotting events and recurrent spontaneous miscarrages. See a hematology specialist for advice on this problem.

: Level below 40 is likely not consistent with APS unless you have other clinical feature(s) which strongly suggests this syndrome.

: You can have lupus, you have some symptoms,  fatigue, low platelets, and Raynaud's phenomenon, and the high ANAs titer. The coexistence of Lupus and psoriasis is rare but not impossible.

Sounds good: You'll do well to discuss with your personal health care provider, but it sounds to me like you recovered from an episode of  hepatitis b, perhaps before you were immunized.

No right answer: There is no right answer to this question. It depends on the virus or vaccine and it depends on the person. The answer can be anywhere from three to twenty four weeks.

what causes high igg antibodies but negative igm?

Accepted Answer

Immunity: Igm is the first line of defense and reacts first, then long term immunity is provided by igg. So a positive igg and negative igm to something means an old exposure.
