my lips are broken out like they are chapped but are not healing. they are big and puff. been that way for a week. what can i take to heal them?  its not fever blisters.

Multivitamins: Just in case your symptoms are due to vitamin deficiency try taking an over the counter multivitamin. Any multivitamin will do. In addition use an emollient frequently. If that does not work, you may need to see your doctor.

Leave em alone: Fever blisters are best treated by leaving them alone to dry out. It seems that when an anesthetic gel is put on these things...We tend to overdo it.  If you are prone towards getting these things then talk to your dentist and get something that can shorten their duration and pain intensity.

Vaginal herpes: Herpes in the genital tract can be either type 1 or type 2.  Assuming you are already infected with type 1 with oral/labial lesions, that does not exclude the possibility you can also get type 2 genitally.

Depends: It depends if you ever had chicken pox before. You may want to be tested with a blood test to see if you had chicken pox in the past. If you did not, then please get vaccinated for chicken pox so that you will never get that illness (which can be  a difficult illness in adults). You will not get cold sores or shingles f you never had chicken pox as a child.

See below: To prevent cold sores from occurring wash hands often. Maintain a healthful lifestyle (regular exercise, nutritious diet, adequate sleep, keeping stress at bay). Keep lips well moisturized & apply sun screen to the areas that your cold sores normally pop up. Talk with your physician about supplementing with lysine. Melissa officinalis or lemon balm can help heal fever blisters.

Time will heal: It is true that this is caused by herpes simplex virus. Treatment is largely for comfort, and a product like orabase can be used, which uses a covering with a topical anesthetic. Anti-viral medications are very seldom used for "cold sores". It is a virus which resides in the nerve trunks of the facial nerves, and will recur. Good luck... 7-10 days...

Heals on it's own: A fever blister is a virus (herpes simplex)  nystatin is for fungus.  Ice applied to the area will help with the pain, as will something like benzyl alcohol.  If you get many of them or frequent outbreaks a doctor can prescribe an antiviral. This may also reduce the time you have it by a day or so.
