Increased risk: Abdominal wall hernias are repaired to prevent bowel from becoming stuck (incarcerated) in the hernia. Blood flow can become compromised, intestinal blockages and pain also occur.  Larger hernias are safer then smaller ones. Each time a hernia is repaired the chance of success goes down. Weigh loss, smoking cessation, exercise, and good nutrition can improve your outcome. You have to weigh options

Hernias: Hernias can protrude with weight loss. The fat that was plugging the opening may shrink and allow fat or abdominal organs to protrude. You should start with a physical exam to see if your hernia can be felt. A general surgeon or general internist can examine you. If it is small, an ultrasound or ct scan can image the hernia. Blood tests will not help.

have a lump. us showed asymmetric shadowing soft tissue noted to the right of umbilicus is only visualized in the upright position. this may represent herniated loop of bowel, however no definitive abdominal wall defect. recommend ct.. hernia?

Matter of degree: A weak spot in the abdominal wall is on its way to becoming a hernia. Sometimes this happens suddenly and sometimes gradually.

No: The definition of a hernia is any weak spot in the body wall (e.g. Abdominal) through which internal organs such as intestines can protrude through.  If the intestine protrudes through and is able to be easily pushed back in, then it is reducible or non-incarcerated.  If it is stuck in the hernia sac, then it's incarcerated or irreducible - this is an emergency.
