Ankle Fusion: Ankle fusion (arthrodesis) absolutely will atrophy certain muscles in the foot and leg, as there is no further motion in the ankle joint.  This limits the amount of contracture and use of the muscle, which leads to muscle wasting and atrophy.  Also, you will not return the blood to your heart as effectively, as you rely on skeletal muscle to push the blood back to the heart (Venous insufficiency)

i have fluid pockets on my neck/shoulder area above my collar bones, under my arms, on the outside of my ankles.. they have been there for about a year or more. should i be worried ?

Fluid pockets : I am not sure what this can be without examining you in person. I wonder if it is lymph edema

recurring compartment syndrome, 7 leg fasciotomies + 1 foot. fluid pockets from fasciotomies causing recurrence again, consider amputation?

I would tend : To want to avoid an amputation if possible. You need to get an answer as to why the problem reoccurs if fasciiotomies were already performed. Is this the same surgeon? Or is it being done by different surgeons?

why do people with emphysema sometimes have problems with fluid retention and ankle swelling?

Right heart strain: This is usually related to right heart strain from lung disease or from pulmonary hypertension (high pressure in the pulmonary vascular bed).  Patients with advanced copd/emphysema develop increased pressure in their lungs which causes the right side of the heart to dilate/enlarge.  This in turn causes fluid retention in the legs/ankles (known as edema).

Elevation, diuretic: Try elevation of your lower extremities.
Consider a diuretic.  There may be venous or lymphatic obstruction which your doctor can diagnose and treat.

Kidney issues: I believe we are told to drink more water then we need. The correct statement would be drink to thirst. If you are thirsty then drink. If you are retaining fluid, then you most likely are drinking too many fluids. However, kidney issues could cause fluid retention and could be a definite medical issue. I would suggest that you see a medical provider and have them check your kidney function.

what could be causing my sudden fluid retention around my ankles causing redness, pins and needles  swelling of the toes and feet and ankles looking like cankles and tightness if on feet for too long?

Accepted Answer

No: The swelling won't cause vessel damage, but it can result from veins which are damaged (like varicose veins).  Other causes can be important such as congestive heart failure, kidney problems, excessive salt retention.  See your doctor to assess it.

Fluid retention: Fluid retention in just one leg is usually related to obstruction in the venous and/or lymphatics draining that swollen leg.
