Instead of just: instinctively getting mad - keep reminding yourself that they care about you. Also remember - that if the dog keeps biting the hand that feeds it - at some  point no one will feed the dog. You are capable of emotionally harming others if you lash out when they try to support you.

We have choices: Some of our reactions to things are from our genetics, temperament, parents, etc. We have no control over those. But a lot of how we feel has to do with the stories we tell ourselves about what is going on (judgments, expectations &amp; beliefs we hold) which we can change. A way to start is outlined in the book The Four Agreements by don Miguel Ruiz. Therapy focused in this direction can help too.

because your father's current symptoms are preceded by the fever and headache, he could have a medical condition changing his behavior.  Sudden and acute onset, alteration in attention, and fluctuating course are the central features of delirium, which can be caused by a wide variety of things including meningitis and drug intoxications.  He needs emergency evaluation.

Depression : Depression is a very serious and dangerous illness if not treated. Complications frequently occur including psychosis, anxieties and mood swings. Help is usually available. Taken the first step and asking for help will be the most difficult part. Please tell the adults around you to take to see somebody, primary care physician, psychiatrist, psychologist, anyone, they will hopefully guide towards what you need. Please do it today, don't wait any longer.

Irritability : Many people that suffer depression may  have irritability and act in ways that they feel they cannot have control over. However, if you feel you are having significant anger issues, extreme behavior fluctuations( swings), or can't recall things you have done my advise is to get a psychologist consult so you get a formal evaluation. It will be very helpful so you understand it in more depth.

Many possibilities: There are many possible reasons for irritability and anger. A psychiatric evaluation might provide insight in a given case. Some people might be in chronic physical pain, or depressed. Some could be using alcohol or other drugs that disinhibit anger or rage.  Some medication side effect too. Others could be suffering bipolar disorder. Certain personality disorders are known for rage episodes.

Xanax (alprazolam)?: I definitely do not think Xanax (alprazolam) is the answer because of it's very addictive qualities.  But there are certainly many other medications for mood and anger.  Those can be symptoms of several different disorders so it's important to get a diagnosis from a doctor.  Counseling is often very helpful too.
