i have anemia and my nail beds are purple a third of the way up. is this because i'm anemic?

Anemia: Weakness, tiredness, sometimes shortness of breath, pale skin, pale membranes in the mouth, and nail bed duskiness - these are common changes with anemia, and become worse as the severity of the anemia gets worse.  Make a plan with your physician on how you are going to correct the anemia.

Blue fingernails: May be indicative of pulmonary obstruction, emphysema or lung disease. Blue fingernails may represent a type of cyanosis caused by a lower level of lack of circulating oxygen in the red blood cells. It may also represent a high level of an abnormal form of hemoglobin in the circulation. If normal color returns upon warming and/or massage, the cause is due to the body part not getting enough blood.

dizziness.pain upon exhorting air.fatigue. ive been diagnosed with anemia.. my nails dont grow.for the past 14years. drs say nothings wrong. ive had all tests and xrays.. they say its mental but im getting paralysed now..who should i see.help?

Hematologist: Consult a hematologist if you have anemia. Appropriate testing will be done. Deficiency of vitamin B12 can cause both anemia and neurological disorders. Levels of Iron and folic acid as well as thyroid status will most likely be checked as well.

Yes: Iron deficiency anemia is common in young women, and your symptoms are often seen in iron deficiency anemia.  It's easy to diagnose by a simple blood test, and easy to cure with oral iron supplement.

Of course, other disorders could be the cause. It's just that iron deficiency anemia is more likely.

Could be: The abnormal movements associated with pernicious anemia is usually due to B12 deficiency and seen more in the young. (folic acid can cause confusion of symptoms and manifestations) adults show more of the sensory problems in terms of symptoms. Just make sure the diagnosis is right and that you are examined and followed well during treatment.

Beau's lines can also also be a sign of zinc deficiency.

: Celiac disease (celiac sprue or gluten-sensitive enteropathy) needs to be ruled out although you do not have significant intestinal symptoms. All other symptoms and signs you mentioned can be present in celiac disease in adults. Good luck.

You have either : B 12 or folate (folic acid) deficiency.  A deficiency of this nature will affect the nervous system as well as the blood.  If you are being treated with folate (folic acid) alone, vitamin B12 should be added  also.  If you are not getting these vitamins it is urgent that you should get them.
