Symptoms: Great question!  the symptoms can generally be quite similar between post-antibiotic diarrhea vs c.Diff  sometimes the best thing to do is undergo testing of the stool.

i took amoxicillin 875 mg 3 times a day for the last 2 days and now i had diarrhea. i had really watery diarrhea the first day and now its not as watery. is that normal? how long does the diarrhea last?

All Ab can cause  D: Often, antibiotic-associated diarrhea is mild and requires no treatment. The diarrhea typically clears up within a few days after you stop taking the antibiotic. The Diarrhea likely will start few days after Antibiotic is given, or days or month after the Ab is stopped. Antibiotics most commonly linked to C. difficile infection include fluoroquinolones, cephalosporin, penicillins and clindamycin.

Depends ...: It depends on how bothersome the diarrhea was/is and what is being treated.  Most bacterial infections can be treated with alternative antibiotics, though diarrhea is a common issue with all antibiotics.  But if you find the diarrhea very bothersome, then it would be reasonable to utilize an alternative.

Yes: You might have better luck with loperamide (Immodium) but neither of these will interfere with the med.

Post-antibx diarrhea: Many antibiotics are non-specific as to what bacteria they kill. When your normal gut flora is depleted by antibiotics you may be at risk for opportunistic pathogens. A very common one is clostridium difficile (c.Diff). Your doctor, in considering this possibility, will order a specific stool check.  If c.Diff is found treatments include: different antibiotics, toxin binders, florastor probiotics.

Not long: If your diarrhea is persistant you should see your doctor as you may have developed another process related to the drug causing the diarrhea.

Common, not normal: Antibiotic associated diarrhea is pretty common; more serious is c difficile  associated colitis, often due to antibiotic use. Call your prescribing doc to notify them, and make adjustments, ranging from eating yogurt, taking probiotics, stopping or changing the meds, or more.

Occurs...: Gastrointestinal side effects can occur with amoxicillin.  Let your pediatrician know.  Hope she gets better quickly.

Possible: It is very possible your intestinal tract flora have been disrupted by the antibiotics. An easy way to help restore your "good" bacteria in the gut is to eat yogurt with live cultures.  The diarrhea should resolve soon; please be sure to stay well hydrated with clear fluids.  You can use products such as pedialyte to help keep your electrolytes up.
