Variable: The survival rate for AML is variable. Dependes on prognostic factors ( clues for good or bad chances, ) and that would mainly include age, dna gene mutation types, type of AML (seven types) and performance status of the patient. In general the younger the patient the chances are better.  In addition there is a seconday AML (after previous chemotherapy or other dieseas, ) that carry poor prognosis.

It Depends: There are many factors that go into determining survival for patients with aml.  Specific chomosomal/genetic changes of the leukemia cells can be associated with a better or worse prognosis and will impact survival as well as treatment options.

AML: Sorry to hear about the aml.  High wbcs are not that uncommon with AML m4.  Survival rates depend on genetics of the leukemia.  These tests were sent with the initial bone marrow (usually) and take a week or so to come back.  Another important test is the bone marrow after the first cycle of chemo.  Good luck to you!

From diagnosis: Usually people talk about overall survival which is from the time of diagnosis of the cancer. However, there are many other survival statistics used by cancer doctors (disease free survival, relapse free survival, time to treatment failure, etc.) which start at different times.

: Cancer cure rests on multiple factors. of the type and the patient and the stage etc. There will soon come a time when that will be possible- just not yet.

Health Statistics: It means that 90% of those who underwent this 'treatment' are alive at year five after the treatment. It says nothing about future survival or non-survival.

Rare but possible: Although all is the more common leukemia in children, AML does happen as well.

Concerning...: Given that you know these numbers (low platelets and increased lymphocytes with atypical lymphocytes), i assume a physician is following these numbers. A pathologist can look at the atypical lymphocytes and special tests can be performed if there is a concern of relapse. A viral infection could also cause these numbers, as long as the atypical cells are confirmed not to be blasts.

Yes: depending upon his general health/cardiac status there are medications which can help with his blood counts until side effects of CHEMO are past.....his own INTERNAL STRENGTH is ALL IMPORTANT ..Those AROUND him can "help" with that! Good Luck Be well
