Amikacin: This drug is in a class of antibiotics known as aminoglycosides. These days there are limiited clinical situations in which they should be used because of both nephro (kidney) and oto (8th nerve) toxicities. In my opinion all patients receiving this should have 8th nerve function tested periodically as well as renal function and duration of treatment should be kept as brief as possible.

Find a doctor or clinic where recommended treatments are understood and used.

Short, Variable: Amikacin is an antibiotic that is given by iv. In adults, the half-life is typically about 2 hours, with longer half lives in kids, and up to 8+ hours in newborns. It's cleared by the kidney only, so in patients with kidney failure it can last for much longer, up to days.
