Ambroxol is a…: Mucolytic agent, i.e., it makes mucus & sputum thinner & less viscous (sticky) & therefore more easily removed by coughing; so it is beneficial in diseases associated with increased mucus production (acute/chronic bronchitis, copd). It also appears to have anti-inflammatory properties. None of the articles i reviewed noted that this drug is not available in the us. Ask your fp/pharmacist.

Cough: Prolonged cough may be due to mycoplasma, chlamydia, adult pertussis or other conditions. Needs to be evaluated. Two weeks of antibiotics without a response suggests a need for further evaluation.  Good luck.

Ambroxol: The only side effect i could find for ambroxol hydrochloride is just some mild gastrointestinal distress.

: The medication may have side effects and cause allergic reactions. Please discuss other alternatives with your Pediatrician. These include cool air mist, nasal saline and gentle suction. Monitor your child's temperature and breathing. If the medication is for an acute viral illness, there are other options.

See Your Doctor Now: 4 yr old taking antitusive "safe to give ambroxol"? Cough has many causes, at her age infection is most likely. Giving suppressants without knowing the cause can allow an undiagnosed infection to develop complications like pneumonia. Ambroxol reportedly controls mucous production which also occurs in infection. Do NOT give Ambroxol. See your child's doctor now for correct diagnosis and treatment.

my 6mo old was prescribed loratadine/ambroxol. she seems very drowsy, why? and how long will it stay i her system?

Mgt: If your baby is more drowsy/lethargic, not feeding well, please see your ED. This may not be related to the medications, but rather to an illness.  The ambroxol should be discontinued until further evaluation is completed. For excessive mucus production, nasal saline drops and gentle suction is the only treatment advised in this age group, unless there is a tracheostomy or some other problem.

Ambroxol: A safer approach is to use salt water nosed drops, a bulb syringe to suck out mucous from your baby's nose as well as using a vaporizer with the amoxicillen.
