3 year old daughter 28 lbs. fever and earache started saturday. alternating tylenol and motrin. had dose of tylenol and vomited immediately after dose. is it safe to give tylenol suppository? or wait an hour until she can have the motrin again?

: I have never found alternating these two very helpful. I like the Motrin since it lasts longer. If the kids fever is at or less than 102 at that age &amp; she is taking fluids well/eating some, I would stick with the Motrin alone. If the fever is less than 101 I would not treat it, but use Motrin for comfort as needed.

Mgt: I would suggest calling your surgeon's office or answering service right away. Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Motrin may be given in sips or mixed with something that tastes better. Please monitor his fluid intake and his temperature. He should not have any breathing difficulty or fever.

Some basics: Fever is a normal body response to illness which increases heart &amp; breathing rate to push blood along to supply improve tissue access to oxygen &amp;  healing factors. Low grade fever under 103 has no adverse effect on the body beyond the achy feeling. Fever meds for comfort can be given as needed, but are not required. I use one or the other but not both.

Either: Fever - need to treat only if child is uncomfortable. Fever is the body's response to infection. Tylenol can be dosed every 4-6 hours, motrin every 6-8 hours. Both are effective.

None: I've never heard of a patient experiencing withdrawals from either of those medications.  The only thing i can think of might be a recurrence of pain if you have been taking either of them for awhile.

Both help with pain: But Motrin is an antiinflamatory as well. This blocks  prostaglandins wich causes inflamation and pain. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is a simple pain reliever and not an antiiinflamatory agent. Motrin can cause ulcers, kidney failure, and possibly cardivascular enents such as heart attacks.

Yes: These are different types of medications and do not interact with each other.  Motrin is an NSAID which is both anti-inflammatory and for pain and fever.  Tylenol (acetaminophen) is a pain and fever reliever. You should discuss your pain medicine regimen with your doctor.

Yes: Tylenol (generic name: acetaminophen) and Motrin (generic name: ibuprofen) are different drugs, and can be taken together. Just make sure that you don't take more than the recommended dose of either drug, and that you don't take other medications (like cold medicines, or other pain medicines) that have Acetaminophen in them too. Also, avoid nsaids (like motrin) in pregnancy.
