i have a thyroglossal duct cyst, small (per the dr).  i am seeing an ent tomorrow.  what are thoughts on ethanol ablation as an alt to surgery?

i've attached my ast/alt levels. currently am waiting for liver ct as i have growing "cysts". i can barely function. any insight?

CT important: most liver cysts are not painful. At a certain size they may cause symptoms including pain. Simple cysts can be drained and made smaller by an invasive radiologist. Surgeons can also respect the offending segment. It is best talk to your doctor to discuss your options following the CT.

Unusual: Uti, per se , doesn't cause elevated liver enzymes unless the patient develops an associated septick shock (disseminated infection) with very low blood pressure to cause a liver shock/injury. Alternatively antibiotic used to treat UTI may cause drug induced hepatitis. There is many other causes of elevated liver enzymes and sometimes a liver biopsy may be required to find the exact cause.

i had an abdominal ultrasound per doctor's instruction and was found to have right hepatic cyst. my sgpt is 76.30 u/l. should i worry?

Elevated liver enzym: Liver cyst probably is not the reason for the elevated liver enzyme.  find out the reason for the elevated SGPT.

ct of abdomen in february last year. noted: small hypoattenutating hepatic cysts too small to characterize, statistically likely hepatic cysts. dr not  worried. in january after antibiotics and diflucan my alt is 50 from 20 in oct. please help scared?

Recheck LFTs: Mild elevation of liver enzymes are common, so I would not be too concerned. A repeat blood test to recheck the liver enzymes is  the best thing to do.
If there is any further concern, CT scan of the abdomen could be repeated but it will depend on why the first CT scan was done one year back. Do you have history of Cancer in the abdomen? Please provide details of your past medical history.

ALT: Alanine aminotransferase (ALT)  is a liver function test that can be used to assess for liver damage/ disease.

Do you drink?: Alt of 52 is slightly elevated. The commonest cause of alt elevation is alcohol. If you drink, stop for three months and re do the test. Please note that all lab results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and your doctor is in the best position to do that.

Many causes: Obesity, viral infection, and alcohol are the 3 leading causes. There are many others. A complete evaluation would likely reveal the cause but as an isolated blood test, it says little except that there is inflammation in your liver.

what causes false positive alt result?

Accepted Answer

No such thing: If the alt is elevated, something's caused the enzyme to leak from your liver and/or skeletal muscles. Today's assays are reliable. But this does not necessarily means you are sick. It can be from the ultramarathon you just ran, or the Ibuprofen you took for the cold you're now better from. Your physician knows how to follow this up -- often just a repeat draw will lay concerns to rest.
