Periph. neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy is a problem of the nerves in the extremities and has several major causes:  most common is diabetes, but alcohol abuse is also a common cause. Generally, the symptoms can be treated somewhat with medications to make the nerves less irritable, but alcoholic neuropathies are typically irreversible.  See your doctor for treatment options.

Alcohol: Alcohol alters nerve conduction by occupying the GABA receptor in the brain. Tingling can sometimes occur. If it is on both sides, that is the likely cause. If you want to avoid it in the future, avoid alcohol. If you develop weakness of arm or leg on one side, slurred speech, or other concerning symptoms, go to the ER. Hope this helps!

Nerve compression: This is usually due to a disturbance of a nerve by compression from an external force or some internal dysfunction like a disc protrusion or swelling along the path of the nerve.  Other causes include diabetes, and chemotherapy.  Most can be stopped with massage or readjustment of the position of the involved limb.  If persistent see your family doctor for analysis and treatment.

Depends on operation: Pins and needles reflects irritation of nerve branches.  This is common near any incision site especially if the skin had to be retracted for a while.  Tingling away from an operative site may reflect swelling or traction of a major nerve branch near the op site.  Be concerned if you develop weakness or muscle atrophy, severe jolts of pain in the nerve distribution.

Hard to know: Hard to know without examining you.  Could be anything from carpal tunnel syndrome to a pinched nerve in your neck. I would suggest prompt evaluation with a physiatrist or neurologist.

Meralgia: The most common cause of tingling in the lateral (outside) of the thighs is pressure on the lateral cutaneous nerve.  This nerve is shallow at the front of the pelvic bone, and can be compressed there by tight, low belts; injured by a bump at that level, or by a belly that is enlarged, like in pregnancy. It is particularly common in diabetics.  If you can avoid pressure on the nerve it may recover.

Depends: The area of pins and needles you experience may indicate a peripheral (small) nerve, or a problem in your neck. See your physician soon. If you have problems moving your eyes downward, see a neurologist..  If your symptoms progress, or include difficulty swallowing or arm numbness,  go to the emergency room.
