Yes.: Large studies have demonstrated a protective effect on longevity of 1-2 drinks per day for males and 1 for females. The type of alcohol does not seem to matter (french and germans have both studied this -  wine vs beer).  If you have underlying liver disease this may not apply to you.

Alcoholism: If you drink heavily or to black out or just too much you may find that you cannot control your drinking.  You can make plans but if  you have the ism of alcoholism you may need to give up the control and ask for help.

Help is there.  There are addiction counselors or addiction psychiatrists. There are detox and treatment centers.  There are group therapy programs such as aa.
