Prostate cancer: Psa: prostate specific antigen. This is usually a blood test, separated into "free psa" and total psa. The ratio is separated into age specific groups, with an associated predictive value of prostate cancer. Most of the time, in asymptomatic men, psa is not measured routinely until age 50. Then it is based on a baseline level, prostate size, and whether there are symptoms of enlargement.

: Yes it is. It is extremely unusual to have a PSA done at your age unless there is a very specific indication.

Cause for concern: Doubling of the psa without any cause for the increase (for instance infection, prostatitis, recent prostate procedure) should be cause for concern.  The trend of the psa is sometimes more important and can provide more information than the absolute number.  I would strongly encourage you to discuss this with a urologist.

Get 2 opinions: This is early prostate cancer and can be treated quite well with Radiotherapy. yet you should obtain opinion from two specialists: a Urologist and a Radiation Oncologist. This  would give you full information about your Cancer and what to expect from this disease whether it is treated or watched and monitored closely(Surveillance).

PSA levels: I don't know why your PSA is rising.  A PSA up to 2.5 ng/ml  is still a pretty safe number.  Many recommend that a man with a PSA over  4 ng/mL be referred to an urologist. Ask your doctor what your treatment plan is.

This : This really depends on what your total psa is.  If your total psa is between 4 and 10 it is more significant as the lower your free psa, the higher the likelihood of prostate cancer.  If your psa is less than 4, the free psa is really not that important.
