Coughing / Chocking: Coughing while eating is Chocking, you may be aspirating food into your lung, acid reflux disease or GERD is a common cause

i've recently lost about 60 lbs of weight, and i've started feeling shortness of breath and an empty sensation in my abdomen a few hours after and before meals. is this just hunger? i've never felt this before and i used to do intermittent fasting?

Shortness of breath: Shortness of breath at rest may be part of the gastric syndrome you're experiencing, but if you note abnormal shortness of breath with exertion, it should be evaluated. With your dieting and weight loss, vitamin deficiency, iron deficiency,anemia would be some concerns.  I recommend seeing your physician or an internist to evaluate you and order appropriate tests including chest xray and EKG.

Research published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology notes that GERD may be associated with breathing difficulties such as bronchoaspiration, which can sometimes lead to life-threatening respiratory complications.

: May be reflux . May consider omeprazole or famotidine for reflux . Also may be gall bladder , esophagitis or even eosinophilic esophagitis. Consider evaluation by gastroenterology

Reflux?: You may be having gastroesophageal reflux which can cause bronchospasm. The bronchospasm, in turn, could be causing your shortness of breath. There are good prescription meds to treat reflux so see your doctor. Treating the reflux should prevent the symptom from occurring!

Carcinoid syndrome?: Consider possible carcinoid syndrome.  Check urine for serotonin metabolites.  It may also cause migraine-like headaches (not a true migraine), and perhaps other symptoms attributed to your "autonomic instability".
