Just like "Speed": Frequently medications used for adhd are stimulants. Brain of those with adhd is different and are slowed down by these medications as opposed to "getting high" which would be reaction if not adhd. Use of these medications if not adhd is not only illegal, but potentially addictive and result in socially inappropriate and possibly life threating behavior.

Not to my knowledge: Most adhd medication is a controlled substance and in my office an adult parent or guardian must pick up the prescriptions. They must also authorize the evaluation and care for the non-adult patient. Once they are an adult, the information from the visit and logistics for the meds become a private matter between patient and doc.

CONFUSING QUESTION: Concerta and reduce appetite, but it is not for weight loss. Also losing weight is more often a matter of proper nutrition in type and quantity of food plus appropriate exercise.
If on Concerta for adhd and weight is going down, timing of meals and type of food becomes important.

Weight loss, insomni: The most noticeable side effect is wt loss due to decrease appetite. I've also seen a lot of children being very angry and agressive as soon as the effect is gone. Usually around 4 pm, depending on the dose and medicine.This could be solved adding a short term stimulant, like plain Ritalin (methylphenidate) around 1 pm. Make sure to monitor bed time. Stimulants also cause insomnia.
