Yes: Love them unconditionally. Be honest with them, encourage them to share with you. Play with them. Have boundries with them. Encourage extracirricular actives such as sports, music, the arts. Let them know certain things you will not tolerate in your house such as underage drinking or drug use. Take a good look at your own "habits". Know their friends, dont be afraid to be nosey. And pray like heck.

There is also a genetic component to addiction as well. These children may take on unhealthy roles, can't be "kids".
