Lowering blood sugar: This med helps to lower blood sugar by improving the cell ability to respond to Insulin as well as reducing sugar-producing ability of the liver. It has quite a few significant side effects and currently a big concern is risk of bladder cancer for long-term use (more than 1 yr). So, if you are on it, follow-up/consult doc regularly. Benefit vs risk..: Like any other medicine in use, consider benefit vs risk--same as driving a car (getting to  places faster with risk of accident/breakdown etc..). Currently the biggest concern for people is the risk of bladder cancer on long-term use (40% increase/yr: from 7/10000 to 10/10000 cases). The percentage is big, but absolute is still small. There are alternatives! so, consult doc. Good luck.

Her are some side: Effect of actos:muscle pain -- up to 5.4 percent , tooth problems -- up to 5.3 percent' , sore throat -- up to 5.1 percent , swelling or water weight gain, and others not as frequent but could serious.•symptoms of bladder cancer, symptoms of low blood sugar, trouble breathing, swelling, especially in the legs or ankles, rapid increase in weight, liver problems. A related drug (avandia) got slammed for increasing coronary heart disease, but this never affected actos (pioglitazone).  These drugs may increase bone loss.  Now there is a weak inference of bladder cancer, and the media and lawyers are all over this like sharks on fresh meat.
