Depends : Depends what medication you are using and what type of scars you are talking about.  If they are hyperpigmented scars, treatment options would include hydroquinone fade creams.  If they are red marks, sometimes pulsed dye laser can help.  But, if they are depressed scars or ice pick scars, that might require surgery or laser resurfacing.  Those patients on Accutane or retin a (tretinoin) also should also avoid treatment of scars during their treatment.  I guess you should probably follow up with your dermatologist to discuss. I hope that helps a little.

Ideally, one: Skin resurfacing with fractionated lasers attempts to balance between treating enough surface area to rejuvenate your skin and leaving untreated skin intact to hasten recovery. This requires fine tuning the treatment density and intensity to blend the scar. It is possible to spread a single treatment over several sessions, but this should be discussed ahead of time with your provider.  Good luck.

There : There are several treatments to help improve acne scars. One common treatment used to improve the appearance of these acne scars is to do skin resurfacing. Resurfacing involves removing the outer layers of skin cell and then allowing new skin cells to reline the area giving a more smooth appearance.

Ice pick scars have a relatively narrow base but are deep making it difficult to remove the surrounding skin cells deep enough to fully improve the scar. In my experience what works best in these situations is to directly excise the ice pick scars (as if you were removing a mole, for example). I usually allow these excision sites to heal and then perform a second stage resurfacing procedure to the affected areas of the face, though (since you were looking for a fast treatment) you don't necessarily have to do a second stage if you are happy with the improvement from the initial excision.

Dermabrasion : Dermabrasion does have a risk of leaving discolouration of the skin and the risk is higher if you have dark skin.  A safer, and probably more effective treatment would be one of the fractionated lasers, especially the non-ablative lasers (fraxel) if you have dark skin.

Both: Both are great treatments in the right hands.  Only go to a dermatologist with a lot of experience, not just any laser or salon that does these treatments.  It can be horrific if performed in the wrong hands.

Your : Your options might be determined by your skin coloring, but all sking types will be improved with the use of topical rx tretinoin cream (retin a).  It will hydrate and smoot your skin and even out any uneveness of pigmentation.  Otherwise do not waste your money on any over the counter medicines, they do not work.  Very few other topical rx meds are appropriate.  There are at least three kinds of scars: keloid (not you), "box car", and "ice pick".  The five most effective treatments are steroid injection, minor surgery (to "release scar from below"), chemical peel, fillers (short term or permanent), and fractional co2 laser resurfacing. You can have close to 100% improvement of your scars if you find the right surgeon or dermatologist that specializes in this issue.  Good luck.

For prescription treatments you may be prescribed antibiotics, retinoids or vitamin a derivatives, azelaic acid, oral contraceptives, or spironolactone. Always ask a dermatologist about the possible affects and the risks vs benefits of each treatment. Make sure it's best for you.
