Keep trying: Benzoyl peroxide is the only one you can buy yourself that does any good. Your physician may have tried a retinoic acid derivative and topical clindamycin. A good next step is systemic tetracycline 500 2x/day. The last is accutane, which is unplesant & has risks but will do the job. Or you may not actually have acne but one of its mimics. Consider a specialist visit.

Use good sunscreen: Some meds used in acne especially the tetracycline antibiotic Minocycline and doxy make you sensitive to UV rays

Usually ok to do: For treatment of acne, over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide gel or cream can be quite helpful. If desired, a doctor can add an antibiotic gel or cream such as Cleocin (clindamycin) gel. If more help is needed, prescription retinoids such as Retin-A or Differin gel can be used instead of benzoyl peroxide. Oral antibiotics such as tetracycline are sometiimes used also. Review the drugs with the doctor.

Serious Rx: If you have acne on your trunk, you're going to need both topical and systemic therapy. You're already on topical benzoyl peroxide and a macrolide. Evidently it is not working.  Acne is a serious, chronic, non-lifestyle-related disease that needs to be managed even if you have to deal with dry skin. Options for you now include spironolactone, the oral contraceptive pill, and isotretinoin.

I use clindamycin: Over-the-counter stuff doesn't work.  I prefer topical Clindamycin with or without a retinoic acid derivative for starters.  I add oral tetracycline or Erythromycin depending on what's right for the person should it be necessary.  Dermatologists have the big guns for severe disease.   Good luck.

Forgive my frankness: This is the 21st century. Acne is a serious, chronic, non-lifestyle-related disease that can disfigure a young person physically and emotionally for life. It can be managed by any scientific physician with the expectation of a good result. Don't let an emotional aversion to scientific medicine deny you, or someone for whom you are responsible, the benefits of a real treatment.

Antibiotics,accutane: Antibiotics are often used to treat acne. Tetracycline, minocycline, dand Doxycycline have been used for decades in the treatment of acne. In resistant cases dermatologists will use other snitbiotics .If antibiotics fail accutane, a vitamin derivitative drug is used but must be carefully monitored to prevent birth defects and other potential side effects by a doctor registered to use accutane.
