Orthopaedics consult: If you have significant night pain, an osteoid osteoma comes to mind. However, the best answer is to refer you to an orthopaedic surgeon for a full history and exam. Imaging such as x-rays helps in the diagnosis of such issues. Have you had any trauma to your shin? Playing sports? Your physician will be able to look at your leg in person and give expert advice. Lumps and bumps : You are an 18 year old female with a painful bump, please see your doctor. Unless there has been direct trauma to explain this I have a high suspicion and concern. This must be worked up. Orthopaedics has a protocol based on your age and location of bump. This is not to be ignored.

i walk 2 miles every night and my left ankle to mid shin really aches. what is this and how can i make it stop?

Likely shin splints: This kind of exercise causes lots of stress on your bones.  If your weight is in a good range, i would ask your family doctor to consider x-ray to look for stress lines of increased calcium.  If they are there you mild want to alternate swimming with your walking to decrease this stress.

Shin pain: if you are having pain on the front of your shin its very unlikely to be a blood clot. The main blood vessels run in the back of the leg. You might have over strained your muscles, or have a mineral deficiency which is causing pain in your leg.

what could cause a vague aching sensation in my legs after a night of hanging out and drinking alcohol? it's mostly noticeable in my shins and calves.

Vague indeed: Electrolyte imbalance (hang over) , trauma not recalled, lactic acid build up for what ever reason (excessive standing, walking or even passing out with one leg pinned under the other) or spending too much time on a bar stool resulting in compression of the sciatic nerve. At age 26 you are a bit young to develop alcoholic neuropathy in the absence of any additional condition (diabetes, B vit low)

are growing pains real? during teen years severe shin pain just above ankle to mid-shin both legs front only, only at night. so bad at times it hurt to walk. burning ache. quit about age 20. have them again now, sporadically. what could cause this?

: While growing our bones will grow quicker than muscles.  Thus you develop an imbalance requiring stretching of the muscles.   As we get older and more sedentary in life our muscles will become tight thus requiring stretching   Everyone is different in their flexibility. Recommend seeing a physical therapist and develop a plan.

SImple means: With injury to our tissues, inflammation (red, hot, swelling, tenderness) occurs. There is leakage of blood from damaged capillaries and veins which collects under the skin and causes the purple blue coloring we call a bruise. Over time, damaged tissues heal and blood collections are reabsorbed. Protect the area to promote fastest healing. Motrin/advil will help.

can a superficial clot on the shin cause pain, tenseness and aches in the calf?

Blood clot: Yes, but you need to have an ultrasound done to rule out deep vein thrombosis which could break off and become a pulmonary embolus, which can kill people. If it hasn't been done yet, and you have a superficial clot, go to an urgent care center or Er for an emergent ultrasound and anti-thrombotic treatment. Usually with blood clots, there is pain, swelling, redness, warmth, and maybe a tender cord

Inflammation: Shins can hurt when people overuse the muscles and tendons that lie in the groove of the "shin bone".  This is called shin splints, or tendinitis.  There are other possible causes, however, including bone diseases.  You really should have someone quickly examine the shins and decide if an anti inflammatory like Ibuprofen is the right choice or not.

i work 3 days standing for 7 hrs with a 15 min break. my legs, especially shins, are sore until the next day. what are the long term affects of this?
