Drainage and meds: Usually we drain the abscess with with a needle or incise it with a blade under local anesthesia. Then we treat with antibiotics and sometimes steroids.

Yes and more yes: CT is the best way simplest way quickest way to diagnose a tonsillar abscess. It will definitely change the course of action if it extends beyond the tonsils. There are extremely low risks from radiation and well worth it. This is a delicate region to delay a decision. See your doctor. Good luck
