Conception: Most women ovulate about 14 days prior to the start of their period.  You can confirm this with an ovulation kit. Once you know the most common days you ovulate, then you should avoid intercourse at least 3 days before and after.  There are good apps, and instructions on the web about natural family planning. This works well for many women.

Some facts: Pregnancy has been documented from exposure on any day of a woman's cycle including during menses. These are rare but can occur, more often if cycles are irregular. I consider there to be  no "safe" days. If it matters she needs to be on BC or you need to use condoms for any contact.

Pregnancy risk ?'s: Since menstrual periods last for 5-7 days, and ovulation can occur between 12-14 days with regular cycles, pregnancy is possible with unprotected sex "four days after" a "period".  If next period is delayed, obtain a serum HCG test to be certain about pregnancy.

The best time to take one is when you miss your period.  If you doubt the result you can repeat it in 1-2 days. If you were pregnant the hormone level would rise enough for detection.
