Given his history of stroke complicated by heart disease, it's very common to report memory loss after open heart surgery since small clots can fly off into brain. Or he might be suffering from delirium due to anesthesia, medications, infection, blood clot to lung, uncontrolled pain, etc.

5. Medication: there are some cardiac medication that target specific actions in the heart. To name a few: 
your doctor can consider prescribing a diuretic to decrease preload into the heart, decreases the workload of the heart. He can also prescribe a medicine to increase contractility and make the heart pump stronger, if your doctor deems this an appropriate treatment.
Talk to your doctor about these options, and also about choosing a diet and life style that can help increase the quality of your comfort.

More Information: Your question is interesting when I see that you have had a number of "sophisticated" cardiac tests.
Yes one heartbeat initiates circulation at a given pressure but a lot of disorders affect the VESSELS which require the heart to beat at a higher pressure.

Enlargement of vessel means a dilation (ballooning out as pictured here) to larger than it should be. It right next to the heart--aortic root, it can cause the valve to leak, and if severe it can cause much problem. Enlargement further down may burst, that causes serious problem too. Consult doc.
