Soft or hard ?: If the kid is passing pebbles it is extracting too much water from the poop which is what the colon does. An ounce of prune juice 1-4 times a day (spread out) should get things moving in a few days. If the poop is soft, the "strain" may just be the effort a kid using flabby belly muscles &amp; pushing from the breathing muscle needs to poop. They don't have gravity to help.

Get baby checked: Constipation at this age is either diet related, i.e excessive dairy intake or some reason for them to hold stools like an anal fissure, for which a proper exam will be helpful. In the meantime, u can add more vegetables to his diet and give him Karo syrup or prune juice.

Sometimes: Many children become constipated but it is by no means normal - many parents use an occasional glycerin suppository without issue but you really should discuss this with your doctor and have the child checked as this is not normal and possibly a change in diet or a medication may be more helpful especially if this is chronic

Stool retention: This is a sad problem that is all too common. After a kid learns s/he can hold it, they do so at some point &amp; when they do go it is bulky or dry &amp; it hurts to pass. They then hold it to avoid further pain &amp; the cycle repeats. They don't understand they could avoid pain if they didn't let it bulk up. This often requires a stool softener like Miralax used daily for 2X the duration of the problem.

Doutful: Children under the age of 12 months are at risk for Botulism is they eat honey (especially raw honey) because their digestive systems can't hand the spores. About 20 percent of  botulism cases involve honey or corn syrup.

Rare but possible: Infant botulism is rare; most cases occur in babies under 6 months old, but it's possible in a 10 mo.old. Constipation is often the first symptom but I wouldn't be too concerned unless he develops other symptoms such as muscle weakness.Symptoms develop 3-30 days after eating.See

Probably OK: It is not unusual for babies to have change in stool pattern as they grow. . Also, it is normal for breastfed babies to have longer periods of time with no stools.  Breast milk is the perfect baby food, thus there is less "waste" so to speak.  If the baby's stomach is not distended, and he has a large soft stool infrequently this is not constipation requiring intervention.

Call your doctor: Breastfed babies can go 5-6 days without pooping. Formula fed babies 1-2 days. A newborn not pooping needs evaluation after a few days. Try gentle rectal stimulation with a frayed clean q-tip or lubricated tip of a rectal thermometer.  Do not try suppositories, water or other home remedy without discussion with your baby's doctor.
