Urine collection: The presence of proteinuria (p) is usually found on a urine analysis. To quantify how much p you have, a 24 hour urine collection is done. 
At the same time, your renal function also be assessed. If you have significant p, blood work will be ordered to see if a diagnosis of the cause of your p can be found. The causes of proteinuria are varied, with the most common one being diabetes. Good luck.
