Need to be seen: The first thing that comes to mind is a possible infection but many things could be going on. You need a full history to begin with. Any changes in medications, fever,pain,weight changes, etc.? You need to see your gynecologist or PCP to get an accurate diagnosis and treatment. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Perimenopause: B"sd
the main  medical issue would be iron defiency anemia.
Generaly this can be a problem at menarche (start up of menses) and as with you in peri-menopause.  Gyn will work to limit bleeding.  My recommendation is keep a check on blood count and iron levels to avoid need for IV iron, transfusion. 
Blood tests usually will not show menopause till periods have stopped.

Irregular periods: Irregular periods are one of the most common problems obgyns treat. If this is one time problem it usually resolves on its own. If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated.  STDs, polyps, fibroids and hormonal changes can cause spotting. If there is a concern for pregnancy then do  a home pregnancy test .  There are many options available to help regulate the menstrual cycle.

Dark blood: Dark, thick blood can be older blood (mixed in with tissue) that is being sloughed.
