You can estimate: Conception date quite accurately.

Properly performed and interpreted ultrasound examinations have a variability of 8% plus or minus the measured dating, so earlier is more accurate.

Ultrasound dating at 6 weeks 0 days should have a 95% confidence range of 5 weeks 4 days to 6 weeks 3 days which is +/- 8%.

Grab a calendar or online (search  "ob wheel") to see estimated conception date.

Yes: It sounds like a retained dead twin that was small and not so much hidden, but difficult to see. This does not happen often, but it definitely can happen...

my daughter in law went for a 33 week sonogram of her baby's heart due to a previous child's heart defect (from a previous marriage).  showed enlarged heart, but all function and formation of the heart normal.  should they be concerned?

Contradictory: If the baby's heart is significantly enlarged, then the formation of the heart isn't entirely normal.  Perhaps her OB means that, while the baby's heart is enlarged, the structure is otherwise normal.  The question of concern should be addressed with your daughter-in-law's obstetrician.  Serial sonograms may be indicated to follow the development of the baby's heart.
