Many : Many children suck their thumb or fingers until age 2 to 4 years old. If they continue sucking  (to include a pacifier) once their permanent teeth come in, it can cause problems with how their teeth align.  If a child sucks her thumb really hard it can also impact her baby teeth.   Because you believe that your daughter may be experiencing an impact from her sucking; i suggest you have her see the dentist. Pedodontists are dentists who specialize in working with children. Stop worrying : Some people do this. It is not going to harm you in any way. Quite a few folks do this compulsively while they are awake — it seems to be in the brain wiring and you cannot simply stop. This can be embarrassing. There’s online resources for this. If you only do it in your sleep, it’s your business, and if you have a decent partner, she will have enough sense not to try to change you.

Slow extinction: You really can't "make" them stop, but you can start by incentivizing them to stop. Painting fingernails for instance, so they don't want to destroy the pretty image. Or working with them to go perhaps a morning without sucking, and if they do they get a sticker. Get enough stickers and they get a small prize. Usually the social group will get rid of it with peer pressure.

Thumb sucking : Socks usually just get wet and them are just stuck i'm the mouth with the thumb.  When ever i had  these types of questions , i always looked  up  and followed whatever dr brazelton  would say to do. He is helpful with sleep  issues as well.
