Erythromycin eye ointment

I'm 5 months pregnant & have pink eye. Dr prescribed erythromycin ointment. She says it's safe for pregnancy. Is it the safest?

I cannot get the prescribed erythromycin ointment into my toddler's eye for pink eye, if I can get it on the eyelid will that help?
