A 47-year-old member asked:

my boyfriend has herpes simplex 1, how much at risk am i of contracting it?

Tell him...: ...To have his doctor prescribe an antiviral (valtrex, famvir, (famciclovir) etc.) and make sure he takes it diligently. That will reduce your risk by at least 50%. Don't kiss him when he has a fever blister, or even when he thinks he might be developing one. That will bring your risk down to 20% or less. Until a vaccine comes out, that's about the best you can do.

How can I treat my child's cold sores?

Time and pain meds: Cold sores are caused by viruses. The good news is that they will go away on their own. The bad news...there's not much that you can do to expedite it. For the most part, if the cold sores are painful, you can give your child pain meds (Tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen). Always check with your pediatrician if you don't know the dose or if you are not sure if that medicine is appropriate.

Can you contract oral herpes from contaminated food?

Herpes: I do not believe so. The virus would need a open sore, crack or cut to enter the body. Could a herpes virus live on food and then brush over a open sore on someone else say for instance sharing a bite on a utensil? Yes , i believe it could be transferred.

Herpes spread: Absolutely, that is how it is spread. If you have a active lesion and the virus enters through his skin or tissue he will be infected. Be open and honest with him and he will respect and love you for this.
