Females: If untreated 10 to 15% of women with chlamydia will develop pelvic inflammatory disease (pid). Pid may start developing within weeks to months of infection. Or it may take longer in others.

Uncertain: Chlamydia is a silent and relatively unaggressive infection, so it is difficult to know if or when it will move up from the cervix and cause tubal inflammation and scarring. Women 25 or younger should be screened annually and treated promptly when positive. This is very effective in preventing infertility.
