Not really: Herpes virus types 1 and 2 are contagious, mainly by direct contact with an infected person's sores. A never-infected person, without protective antibodies, could catch herpes from a patient with herpes encephalitis, but he would likely just get a typical herpes infection and future recurrences of sores. It is very unlikely that he would get herpes encephalitis, because encephalitis is quite rare.

Typically not: Herpes encephalitis is a rare condition- I do not know it to be contagious- it is very serious and needs to be treated aggressively.

Depends: Infectious encephalitis caused by borelia, viruses (yellow fever, hemorrhagic fever viruses), rickettsiae are contagious, but often require the presence of a vector, usually a mosquito or a tick that will transfer the pathogen from the infected person to the healthy one.

Depends on situation: The transmission of the herpes simplex virus is possible from active skin or mucous membrane sores if present. If none are present, the child is not considered contagious. A close examination of all skin surfaces should be done frequently in the early treatment phase as these can be elusive. Good hand washing & contact isolation will limit any spread from active lesions.
