That depends: Many women can clear the infection on their own without having any difficulty. However, for other women, hpv can lead to genital warts or to precancerous cells or both. If you have precancerous cells or dysplasia, you should see your gyn and pursue the recommended treatment in order to avoid progression to cancer. If you have warts and choose not to treat them, they will likely slowly grow.

Usually nothing: The immune system clears most HPV infections, so most infections go away with time and never cause problems. It's still best to be treated for some HPV infections, such as genital warts; and pap smears with advanced abnormaliites should be treated to reduce the risk of cancer. But most HPV infections are harmless and clear up without treatment.
