In the ganglia: Which is a bundle of nerve tissue that contains the body of nerve cells. It acts as a relay station between central and peripheral nervous system. That's where the virus lives. For facial herpes it's in trigeminal or gasserian ganglion, for genital herpes it's in the pelvic dorsal ganglia.
