Depo-provera: "Progesterone only" contraception has an unpredictable effect on ovulation, at times inhibiting it from being "regular". This produces a similarly "unpredictable" effect on the lining of the uterus, which results in irregular shedding of the lining, causing varying degrees of "cramping/spotting".
